Sports Story-- Determined

About to mount the uneven bars, Lee Dockins, 23, of Russellville, Ky., trains for the Summer Special Olympics, set to take place in Athens, Greece, this June where she will compete in Artistic Gymnastics. Lee has Down Syndrome, but that doesn't stop her from training several times a week at Logan County Gymnastics located in Russellville. This will be her second time to participate in the world games since she competed in China 4 years ago where she came home with two gold medals and one bronze. Lee has participated in gymnastics since she was 5, and she became involved with the Special Olympics at 9. Lee has a total of 89 medals; 59 of those are gold.

Lee has been training at Logan County Gymnastics since she started at the age of 5, and works with more than one coach. Lisa Bunce, (left), of Lewisburg, Ky., congratulates Lee after she successfully made a correction to her uneven bar routine.

Lee leads the her parents, Sharon (left) and Harris (center) Dockins, in saying Grace just before dinner. She forgot to mention a couple of people in her prayer and had to go back and include those loved ones. Lee is the Dockins' second child of three, their only girl and their only child with special needs. They speak of the need for patience but mostly about the joys of having a child with Downs. Lee has far exceeded their expectations. When they signed her up for gymnastics, "We never thought it would escalate to this level," Sharon Dockins said.

Lee hugs a friend at the Best Buddies event at Hillvue Heights Church in Bowling Green, Monday night, Feb. 28, 2011. Best Buddies is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating one-on-one friendships between those with special needs and those without. The night included a pizza party, dancing and Karaoke.

While packing her bags months in advance (as to not forget anything) for her trip to Greece, Lee has trouble remembering what and where everything is. Lee's mom, Sharon has to help describe different items on a checklist and ask Lee questions to help uncover where that item might be.

"I'm proud of myself," Lee said when she talks about her achievements in gymnastics. "It's fun-- I like doing tennis and cheerleading, but my favorite sport is gymnastics." Lee plans to represent the United States in the Summer Special Olympics in Athens, Greece, for June 2011.
